In the Spring of 2020, the State Historical Society of Iowa provided grant funds under the Emergency Historical Resource Development Program. These funds helped to secure the exterior envelope of the Walnut St. Baptist Church and stabilize the historical structure from any further deterioration primarily caused by moisture penetration. Roof repair, cleaning and restoring gutters, repairing and purchasing new downspouts, and ventilating the building were key priorities with these grant funds. In-kind work included cleaning out the church.
Volunteer teams from Americorps, neighbors, Habitat for Humanity and local churches helped to clean the interior, as well as mow, remove vines and vegetation close to the building, and secure doors and windows.
