In the summer of 2019, Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity brought together representatives from a variety of organizations, many of whom were arts and culture leaders in the community, to tour the historic Walnut St. Church building. It was an opportunity to imagine possibilities together for a space that stands as a historic landmark in the community but had not been utilized in the last several years and fallen into disrepair. A couple of people from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) were in attendance. They fell in love immediately with the space and the potential for strengthening collaborations between the UNI and Waterloo communities. Many conversations (and building tours) have followed since, and the seeds of possibility have been planted in many innovative minds throughout the Cedar Valley.
